Vegan sauces and marinades that are perfect for the grill

Sun’s out, grill’s out!

If there’s one occasion where people feel slightly lost when cooking up a plant-based feast, it’s a BBQ. We are inundated with pictures of meat-filled BBQs and rarely any vegan editions around us but fear not, we’re here to banish the stigma that grills were made for meat!

Sure, there are plenty of plant-based side options – fresh salads, veg-packed pasta, and falafels and bites, and these tasty additions are just as essential, but the hurdle seems to lie with the main event.

Tofu… a grill’s best friend.

It can seem like a daunting challenge if you’re new to cooking with tofu or not used to using it on the grill. But, you need to know that tofu is a grill’s best friend. It acts like a sponge when you season, marinade, or add any flavour, making it the perfect centerpiece to your grill. You can load it with smoky, tangy, spicy, or herby marinades and sauces, throw it on the grill, and then it’s up to you – pop it in a bun, slice it or skewer it.

Before grabbing at sauce jars and marinade packets, we’ve got some fresh recipes that can be quickly whipped up at home, allowing you to pack in extra flavour and impress your guests with something entirely homemade.

So, how do you prepare the tofu using these delicious miracle-working marinades and sauces? Before we reveal the recipes, let’s talk about how we cook them up.

BBQ or Grill?

Although BBQs are the typical go-to during summer, charcoal is immensely damaging to the environment – accounting for deforestation, destruction of habitats, and the production of greenhouse gas emissions. According to BuildWithRise, one hour of using charcoal on a BBQ can release 11 pounds of carbon dioxide. With multiple people BBQing at the same time during summer, you can see how this amount adds up!

We want to try and reduce our carbon footprint and impact the planet as much as possible, and one way we can all do this is by switching the barbies to electric grills.
You can still cook outside and enjoy that alfresco dining experience, but with a much more environmentally friendly impact.
