Very best vegan sauces

A tasty sauce can be the difference between a good meal and a great meal. Sometimes though, people assume that certain sauces aren’t vegan, or alternatives can’t be found.

Well, we’re on a mission to change that.

Our trusty team of culinary wizards have created many a vegan sauce over the years, so we’ve pulled together some of our favourites. This collection showcases both vegan twists on traditional sauces, and sauces that you may not have known are already vegan by nature. No alterations required!

Not only that, we’ve included some mouth-watering recipes that give you the perfect excuse to get experimenting in the kitchen.

Vegan Twists

Vegan Tzatziki Sauce

Vegan Tzatziki Sauce

Sun, sea and tzatziki – Greece has it all.

This simple recipe uses vegan yoghurt to conjure up a tasty twist on this authentic sauce, which you can then lovingly slather inside this Grilled Vegan Tofu Gyros.

  • 100 g vegan yoghurt
  • ¼ cucumber, coarsely grated
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 10 g fresh mint, finely chopped (optional)

It couldn’t be any simpler – combine all ingredients and set aside!

Vegan Peppercorn Sauce

Vegan Peppercorn Sauce

Synonymous with its rich, warming nature, Peppercorn Sauce is a winter staple for many. So make sure to keep this trusty recipe up your sleeve – substituting in vegan butter makes it a perfect accompaniment for this Tofu Minute Steak with Pomme Frites recipe.

  • 50g vegan butter
  • 1 large shallot, finely sliced
  • 4 tbsp vegan brandy
  • 4 tbsp vegetable stock
  • 4 tbsp soy cream
  • 2 tbsp green peppercorns, jarred
  • Lemon juice, salt and black pepper to taste

  1. Gently saute the shallot in the butter until softened.
  2. Increase the heat, add the brandy and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated.
  3. Add the stock and cook until the volume has reduced by half and repeat with the cream.
  4. Stir in the green peppercorns and season with lemon juice, salt and black pepper.
Vegan Aioli

Vegan Aioli

Aoili is the ultimate, versatile dipping sauce. Bread, grilled tofu, falafel – you name it, aioli will improve it!

Making a simple swap to include vegan mayonnaise means you can now enjoy this guilt-free, ready to dip Tofu Calamari in.

  • 4 tbsp Vegan mayo
  • 1 tsp garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper

Combine the ingredients for the aioli in a small bowl and mix well. Make sure to cover and refrigerate until required to keep it fresh.

Vegan Barbecue Sauce

Vegan Barbecue Sauce

While many barbecue sauces are inherently vegan, make sure to keep an eye out for honey in the ingredients – you don’t want to be caught out.

To avoid that pitfall though, you can make your own! This BBQ sauce is tangy and moreish in equal measure. Either dip your Cauldron vegetarian sausages in or use inside this Smoky American Barbecue Tofu Burger.

  • 8 tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp agave syrup
  • ½ tsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp ground allspice
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp Cayenne powder
  • 1 tbsp liquid smoke
  • 150ml ketchup

  1. Heat all of the ingredients except the ketchup in a pan.
  2. Bring to the boil then simmer for 3-4 minutes, stirring often.
  3. Remove from the heat.
  4. Stir in the ketchup.
  5. Allow to cool.

Vegan Sauces

Vegan Soy Sauce

Sesame Soy Sauce

Soy sauce is synonymous with Chinese cuisine, and a perfect complement for crispy fried tofu. To pour or to dip – that is the question!

  • 6 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 4 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tsp caster sugar

  1. Combine all the ingredients into a mixture
  2. Stir, ensuring that the sugar has fully dissolved
  3. Ready to eat!
Vegan Tamari Dipping Sauce

Tamari Dipping Sauce

Not only is this sauce quick and easy to prepare, but it also has a zingy kick that’ll have you dipping dumplings for days!

  • 3 tbsp tamari
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1tbsp Chinese rice wine
  • ½ spring onion, sliced on the diagonal
  • 1 pinch of chilli flakes

To prepare, simply mix all ingredients in a bowl.

Vegan Katsu Sauce

Katsu Sauce

This Japanese sauce is always a big hit – it’s no coincidence that our Vegan Tofu Katsu Curry is one of our most popular recipes. While it does utilise a few more ingredients than the others, trust us – it’s worth the effort.

  • 4 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 apple, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 carrot, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tbsp freshly grated root ginger
  • 4 tsp curry powder
  • 1 tbsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp Chinese 5 spice
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 250 ml vegetable stock
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tsp cornflour
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds

  1. Heat the coconut oil in a pan and set over a medium heat.
  2. Cook the onion, apple, carrot, garlic and ginger for 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the curry powder, garam masala, Chinese 5 Spice, salt and pepper.
  4. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until fragrant.
  5. Stir through the vegetable stock and bring to a simmer.
  6. Whisk together the soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, mirin, cornflour and sesame oil until smooth.
  7. Stir into the sauce and cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until the sauce is thickened and vegetables are tender.
  8. Using a hand blender, pulse the sauce until smooth.

Those are just some of our favourite vegan sauces, but there’s plenty more out there!
