Why you’re veggie survey
To celebrate National Vegetarian Week, we thought it would be worth seeing just why some Cauldron users are veggie. So, if you are veggie, or have considered it, let us know why. You’ll see the results as soon as you’ve added your reason.

I was brought up as a vegetarian.
For over 50 years I have been a vegetarian…I never have eaten fish /lamb/chicken products ..giving my parents a hard time in providing food choices for me
I do not really know why I was a veggie from as early as I can remember….but it ceratinly has paid off in my health
I just sensed it seemed wrong to eat a living animal
I stopped wanting to eat dead bodies.
I am 20 and turned vegetarian when I was 9. I later became a vegan and have been for 3 years. I became a vegetarian because I found the idea of animals being killed for food upsetting and rather disgusting, but now I am an adult the choice to become vegan is about much more than that. I am very environmentally concious and being vegan dramatically reduces my carbon footprint. It is important to me to be vegan and not just vegetarian as the animals which are raised for milk products and eggs are often fed a diet comprised of cheaply sourced soya protein, which is grown in bulk for this purpose in deforested areas and therefore disastrous for the environment. Another thing that turned me vegan was when I learnt of the cruelty involved in the farming of milk, as the calf must be removed from it’s mother far too early in order for humans to drink the milk. I also learnt that in egg and milk farming, the animals still face the chop once they have stopped producing eggs or milk. I think that the cauldron vegan products are great and fit into my diet and lifestyle really well, although I wish they would stop using milk and eggs to make their products truly animal friendly, and also as there are loads of places to get vegetarian food from but not many sources of vegan food as good as this!
I became vegan as i want to avoid animal suffering and the idea of eating any animal product is now gross to me. I also feel that it’s healthier for me and better for the environment. Supporting the dairy industry is supporting the meat industry so it was the next step for me from being vegetarian to becoming vegan.
No one reason. Just lots that seemed to bubble up almost 20 years ago now. The environment, health, a bit of squeamishness, and a doubt that I could or would do all of the things to bring meat to the table, from raising livestock to slaughtering it and butchering it - if I wouldn’t do it myself on principle, I shouldn’t pay someone else to do it for me.
I am 29 years old and I stopped eating meat when I was 14 years old. My Mum tells me that it was difficult getting me to eat meat as a child and puts this down to a family trip to Wales when I was about 4. We all went for a picnic at a local farm and at the end of the picnic my Mum decided to feed the left-overs to the pigs. The left-overs included Pork pies and my Mum remembers my distress as I put 2 and 2 together and realised that she was feeding the pigs, well pigs! I also remember going out to Wales again during the lambing season and watching the lambs and smiling. The following day was a Sunday and Mum prepared a sunday roast with roast lamb, I was 5 years old and refused to eat it. I have always been an animal lover and I think that some of my childhood experiences confirmed that I no longer wanted to eat meat. I was only allowed to become a veggie once I had learned to cook for myself and eventhough I thought this was really unfair when I was younger I am happy now with my Mums decision as I can confidently say that I am a very good cook! I tried being Vegan when I was a teenager but the diet didn’t suit me but I do still enjoy eating healthy vegan meals. We have a local cafe in Newcastle called the Sky Apple Cafe and I highly recommend them for veggie ‘eating-out’ - their food is fantastic!
It was a bet. Some 15 years ago now, but that was the initial reason pure and simple. The other poll options (except the weight one) all have some pertinence now.
I stopped eating red meat when my mother .got stomach cancer as I felt their could be a link and then after I gave birth I gave up all flesh and became vegan for a while. I did this I think due to animal suffering.Im now on my way to raw vegan.
Boyfriend at the time was strict vegetarian, stopped because he was convinced there was meat in his food if we went for dinner because he could smell it!! Split up years ago and couldn’t face meat ever now, thought i’d lose weight but put it on!
I am aged 25 and only became vegetarian a few months ago following all the programmes that have been on television recently, about the animals, what goes into our food and the whole idea of an animal being killed for us to eat! Never really thought about these things before these programmes but cannot believe i hadn’t!!!! Finding it hard to come up with meals for all the family (as they still eat meat), but i’m sure we’ll get there.
Hi Kerry,
Don’t give up! I’m sure you will find exciting veggie recipes the whole family will appreciate.
